We will leave Siem Reap on countryside roads and trails towards Beng Mealea temple. We will set off from Koh Ker in the morning to Preah Vihear temple, resting on an impressive cliff, overlooking vast parts of Cambodia and Thailand. After spending a few hours there, we drive to the small town of Saem for accommodation.

Total distance 160 km, driving time 6-7 hours.

Accommodation in Saem. Good guesthouse with A/C.

Day 3:

The tour journeys from Saem to Preah Rumkel on the Laos border. There we will visit the mighty Mekong falls of Sopheap Mitt in the afternoon. Here, one can enjoy the peace of this small commune, take a walk along the river and try to spot one of the rare Irrawady river dolphins.

Accommodation in Preah Rumkel. Note: the homestay is very basic. It is basically a big room with 10 mattresses on the floor (including mosquito nets ) in a wooden house and 1 toilet and tiny bathroom. This is the only place available to sleep in the entire area. As well is there no 24 hour electricity available (no fans throughout the night). No A/C.

Day 4:

Wake up in the morning and enjoy the glorious views over the Mekong and Cambodia’s northern neighbor, Laos. You can choose from following activities in the morning: either a boat tour on the Mekong or kayaking, depending on availability (we will do the opposite activity in Stung Treng in the afternoon). Later this morning we will head to the small town of Stung Treng, settled on the shores of the Mekong and Sekong rivers. After lunch, if time allows, we will have a boat trip to the world famous Ramsar wetlands, a heaven for birdwatchers.

On the way back the tour stops at Phnom Sampos, a small and colourfull monastery on a hill on the banks of the Mekong. After lunch, we take the ferry to Koh Trong island located in the middle of the Mekong in front of Kratie town, to visit a floating village and to enjoy the tranquility of the island. For safety reasons, we are not driving the last 145 km to Siem Reap on the bikes, as traffic is unsafe on National Road 6.
